CARL RUBIDGE

Dear Barefoot Central:

I would like to nominate Carl Rubidge for the Footer of the Month. He is an avid barefooter, a member of the ski team, barefoot club, a father of two boys, a realtor, a pilot, and not to mention the fact that he coaches every type of watersport imaginable. He came over from South Africa to the USA to train and to coach at Ron Scarpa Watersports. I admire the fact that he had to courage to leave home and start a new life for himself a half a world away. Carl never boosts about his abilities, but as soon as he hits the water, you know he’s awesome.

He is one of those people who live and breath the sport.  Carl has such passion and drive to help other people, like myself, achieve their goals. I was personally blessed to have somehow crossed paths with Carl.  I owe what I know about barefooting to him. I was having trouble with my wakes and Carl told me, “ You know Marissa, you have to practice, practice, and practice some more, because that is what I did and I scored a 13.6 in my first tournament.”

(I looked up his tournament scores, and he was not kidding) He taught me that to ultimately reach for the stars takes a lot of work, patience, remembering the BIG Picture, and a little bit of humor can get you along way.

Carl is somewhat of a local celebrity at the annual New Year’s Day Barefoot Challenge.  He roots everyone on.  He has placed every year and has won men’s several times.  Carl is a gracious competitor, not concerned with winning, but just doing his best.  He also placed second at the Footin’ on a Curve Tournament this year.

Carl Rubidge is a patient soul one can never forget, because when he walks on to that dock and into your life, you are a better person for it.
